A barter exchange is any person or organization with members or clients that contract with each other (or with the barter exchange) to jointly trade or barter property or services. There are three types of barter exchanges: local barter exchanges, corporate barter exchanges, and online barter exchanges.

About Barter

Barter trade is so great; its main benefit is getting you tons of items and services without spending your cash! Who should barter? Anyone and Everyone! Individuals barter, small businesses barter, fortune 500 companies barter, even governments are bartering. Recently there was a large deal where Thailand bartered rice for some of Chinas trains! On a much smaller scale we have people trading baseball cards, someone might barter theater tickets for clothes, a nice guitar traded for a custom web site, or a husband and wife doing a barter exchange of back rubs. In one form or another, barter systems will always exist.

Before there was money, there was only barter trade. In one form or another barter has existed pretty much forever. Even in nature barter exchanges happen as a necessary means of operation! Trees and plants produce oxygen for us, and we then produce carbon dioxide for them. Humans have been bartering for a long time between each other too. Whole systems of barter happen in tribes and communities, formally or not. For example, one person might do the groups doctoring, in exchange for their special skills like leading, child care, or protection from opposing teams. More formally, perhaps a teepee or yurt was traded for a sheep or pig.

But suppose you make yurts but don't want a sheep or a pig.. Suppose you don't want anything this other person has, but he really wants a yurt. Well along comes some type of currency, which helps people trade without the need for double coincidence of wants. Double coincidence is a term that refers to the fact that for a direct trade to work out, both parties have to happen to desire what the other is offering. Sometimes there is the double coincidence of wants, sometimes there is not.

To help barter trades happen in this new age of technology, barter exchanges have created their own currency. It is often called things like 'trade dollars' 'barter dollars' or in our barter system 'Barter Bucks'. Some groups will print their trade currency onto paper, or fashion coins to represent the values, but most popular is to keep the values of exchanges recorded digitally. Through the power of databases, we can all enjoy bartering without always needing double coincidence of wants.
