The Barter Exchange

Using a Barter Exchange Service

The main benefit in membership with a barter exchange firm is the use of a barter currency or trade credits. Whatever that particular exchange has decided to call it, the units of measurement are 'private' alternative currencies used to represent barter transactions.

The advantage of using a barter currency is that it provides flexibility in trading. When using some form of trade dollars, you do not need to have something that fulfills the needs of the business that you want to trade with. Instead, you just need to supply to someone within the exchange to earn those trade credits.

This is similar to another economy, a barter economy which runs in addition to your regular cash economy. Keep your cash customers, and find some barter customers too.

A barter exchange service is a marketing tool. This is because the members are agreeing to give each other special consideration when one has something that the other wants. Barter exchange services can provide a loyal group of clients/customers for any quality business who is willing to give in return for what they get.

For these services there are usually some fees which can come in a few different forms, also in a variety of amounts. There are three main types of fees which you might encounter; a signup fee, monthly dues, and commissions. Often part or even all of these fees are payable in barter. Remember to negotiate for these fees. There is no harm in trying, and most barter exchanges love barter negotiations.
